Cafe DeBibes

Cafe DeBibes

Spotted this coming out of exit six at Gyeongbokgung station. The Korean text says “Illy Cafe” but this cafe is also branded with the name ‘Cafe DeBibes’ (pronounced Bee-Bays in the Korean text). I tried an espresso here thinking it might be good, but there were a lot of fines in the cup and it tasted over extracted.

If you’re feeling adventurous, give DeBibes a try and let us know in the comments if the quality has improved!

UPDATE: Visited again on 7/2010 and had a nice Illy style double espresso! (Served in a cappuccino cup, but hey, can’t be picky here). If you’re getting out at Gyeongbokgung station to do some touristy stuff, I’d pop in here for a shot before heading out to the Palace. Ignore the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf that’s right next door.

2009년 연말을 Aaron의 가족들과 함께 보내려고 LA에 다녀왔어요.(처음 만나는 자리라 부모님 만나기 전에는 어찌나 긴장을 했는지…친 딸처럼 대해주시는 부모님을 만나고 나서는 편안해졌지만..헤헤)  열흘이라는 짧은시간 덕택에 (488불짜리 속도위반 딱지를 끊기에는 충분한 시간이었지만… 메리 크리스마스다 이 경찰관 아저씨야!) ‘내가 좋아하는 모든 카페에 널 데리고 갈테야’ 라던 Aaron의 말은 안드로메다로 가버렸지만 그 중 세군데 정도는 들를 수 있었어요. 첫번째로 실버레이크에 있는 라밀, 그리고 스튜디오시티에 있는 아로마 커피&티, 마지막으로 베니스에 위치한 인텔리젠시아. 오늘 저희가 소개시켜드리고 싶은 카페는 라밀이라는 곳이에요.

우리나라에 있는 카페들로 비교를 해 보자면 이 카페는 홍대, 삼청동부근 카페들 보다는 강남이나 압구정에 있는 커피집에 가깝다고 할 수 있어요. 메뉴나 인테리어, 전반적 분위기가 매우 고급스럽지만 약간의 허영이 묻어나온달까? 주전부리 할 만한것들이 있는데요, 고가에 양도 적지만 맛은 괜찮은 정도이지 아주 뛰어난 수준은 아니에요. 가격대비 만족할만한 정도는 아닌거죠. 하지만 이 곳을 찾게되는 이유는 바로바로 커피! 바리스타들의 실력도 뛰어나고 커피에대한 지식도 방대하지요. 전체적인 분위기와는 다르게 친절하기까지 한 덕분에 커피에 대해 이것저것 물어보면 차근차근 잘 알려준답니다. 덕분에 Siphon이 뭔지, Clover가 뭔지도 알게됐어요 =)

사실 이런 부분들이 라밀을 특별하게 만들어주는 요소라고도 할 수 있는데요. 커피를 선택할 수 있는 방법들이 참 다양해요. 한국 대다수의 카페들이 그렇듯 Espresso만 있는것이 아니라 French press, Eva Solo, Clover, Chemex, Siphon 등 만드는 방법에 따른 선택의 폭도 넓고, 커피의 원산지에 따라서 주문을 할 수도 있어 고르는 재미도 쏠쏠하고 다른 메뉴가 궁금해서 한 번쯤 더 오고 싶게 하죠. 메뉴판에는 각각의 커피가 원산지에 따라서, 만드는 기법에 따라서 어떻게 맛이 달라지는지에 대한 설명이 자세하게 잘 나와 있어 정확한 명칭을 잘 몰라도 기호에 따라 주문할 수 있게끔 도와주더라구요.

라밀에 갔는데 너무 배가고파 못참을 지경이라 음식을 꼭 시켜야만 한다면! Aaron이 주문했던 피넛버터 바나나 토스트처럼 간단한 간식거리를 주문해보세요. 꽤 맛있었어요.(제가 주문했던 치킨샐러드는 정말 형편없었지만.. ㅠ_ㅠ)

한 가지 더 팁을 드리자면, 저희가 이 곳을 처음 방문했을 때 저는 Earl Grey Tea를 주문했는데요 차도 정말 향긋하고 맛나요! Earl Grey나 English Breakfast같은 기본적인 차들부터 이름조차 들어본 적 없는 생소한 차까지, 친구들과 여러명이서 간다면 차와 커피를 같이 주문해서 다양한 메뉴를 맛 볼 수 있는, 그래서 더 재미있는 시간을 보낼 수 있지 않을까요 ?

9 Days in LA Part One: LAMILL

Despite ambitious plans to hit a different cafe on each day of our Christmas trip to LA, it turns out that there’s more to life than coffee(!). Visiting your home town for nine days is really not enough time to see everyone and do everything, though it was enough time to get a $446 speeding ticket. Merry Christmas to you too, officer.

We were only able to visit a few of my favorite cafes, including LAMILL in Silverlake, Aroma Coffee & Tea in Studio City, and Intelligentsia in Venice. The rest of my to-do list will have to wait for the next trip back home. I’ll start out with a little review of LAMILL, and follow up on the other two cafes in later posts.

Tea at LAMILL

As most reviews point out, LAMILL is dripping with pretensions that border on caricature. The food is pricey, comes in small portions, and rarely rises above mediocrity. I’ve been to LAMILL quite a few times since it’s opening in early 2008, but the only thing keeping me there is the coffee. The baristas at LAMILL are definitely competent and friendly if you talk to them, and the wait staff, despite reviews to the contrary, have always seemed unpretentious to me in a way that doesn’t jive with the rest of the atmosphere. Instead, to me, they always seem like fellow coffee geeks that enjoy explaining the ritual of siphon brewing or answering questions about the Clover.

In fact, this is what sets LAMILL apart from other cafes in LA. They have the largest menu of brewing options I’ve seen, ranging from espresso for some, to French press, Eva Solo, Clover, Chemex, or Siphon. They have an equally large variety of single origin coffees to choose from, including standard options and limited lots. The menu has pretty accurate tasting notes to help you choose.

If you do have to eat something, go for the simple stuff, like this peanut butter banana toast, which is pretty good!

One little known fact about LAMILL is that they have a presence in Korea just outside of Seoul. They don’t seem to have a cafe in Korea, but they do sell beans online (albeit at the standard Korean price of around $30/lb), and supply roasted coffee to several of the Hyatt Hotel locations and other establishments in Korea.

Beijing Airport

Beijing Blizzard

We’re back in Korea, but not before sitting through a mind numbing twelve hour delay at Beijing International, a blizzard that caused 298 cancellations right after we finally took off.

Arriving at 5am local time, after a sleepless 12 hour flight that departed at 1am Los Angeles time, I was in dire need of caffeine. I went to the first cafe I saw at the airport, which, advertising “beer, coffee, pasta,” was quite the multitasker; but like all the food I had there, it sucked.

The barista, who had been passed out on the back counter, woke up and knocked half the things off the counter onto the floor, and then proceeded to fill the entire doser with ground coffee, ensuring stale coffee for everyone after me.

The restaurants in the airport are even worse, at least at 5am. And there are no convenience stores to find snacks. When our flight was delayed, Air China gave us free lunches that consisted of processed bread, which tasted more like sweetened cotton balls, and processed spam-like meats stuffed with pieces of corn. Yum. Thanks China.

So, consider yourself warned: bring your own food to Beijing international, or you might starve if your flight is delayed.
