There’s a relatively fresh addition to Los Angeles’ rapidly blooming downtown coffee repertoire, located on a block that aptly showcases the new downtown LA. The new shop is called Blacktop Coffee, but its owner’s name isn’t new to anyone following specialty coffee – Tyler J. Wells was one of the founders of Handsome Coffee (now owned by Blue Bottle) just a few blocks south. The goal for Blacktop, as he describes it, is a touch humbler than Handsome, with ambitions focusing on building local community and putting the customer experience at the forefront. Quality coffee is still at the core though, with Heart coffee paired to a small menu of edibles. I loved the small, angular and visually rewarding space, including the leafy outdoor patio and adjacent design boutique, Alchemy Works. Check out the photos below for more.
